Homeroom was the result of a 5-day workshop focused on online higher education and a growing perception that it’s not effective.

As a group we identified a missing aspect of traditional education: relationships. We thought about study buddies, student groups, athletic leagues, and all of the other social parts of student life we felt encourage success and sticking it out through the tough times.

From that insight Homeroom was born. We spent the next couple days ironing out the basic structure and functionality of the application, and then we took it from there designing an interactive prototype to test.

The visual style was inspired by chalkboard note-taking.

A design system was created for class study groups, and the icons and UI elements were handdrawn to relate to the logo.

The branding was meant to feel playful and inviting.

The app would be built on the Slack API, piggy-backing on software that already exists and is used in many professional fields today.

Students would be invited, have direct access to their professor, groups would be created, classmates would be introduced to each other, live study groups would be hosted, and class materials shared, all in Slack.

The app would provide professors with a lot of helpful tools like the ability to quickly pull up student information, schedule a 1-on-1 meeting or message them.

Other apps like Google Calendar would be synced so that scheduling meetings can be made a breeze.

Professors would get a birds-eye view of how their class is doing, with live updates and overviews and suggests when some students might need more guidance.
